SUPPORT COMMUNICATION - CUSTOMER ADVISORY

Document ID: c00571541

Version: 1

Advisory: Certain HP Network Interface Controllers (NICs) or Teams(s) with 802.1Q VLAN(s) Blue Screen in CPQTEAM.SYS if a Tag with 4095 (0xfff) is Received

NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.

Release Date: 2005-11-29

Last Updated: 2005-11-29

DESCRIPTION

An HP ProLiant server running Microsoft Windows 2000 or any edition of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 may experience a Blue Screen when all of the following conditions are true:

  • The server is configured with an HP Gigabit Server Adapter/LOM that uses the HP NC10xx/67xx/77xx/150x/320x/325x Gigabit Ethernet NIC Driver.
  • Network Interface Controllers (NICs) with 802.1Q tagged VLANS are configured either in a team or no team.
  • Network Configuration Utility (NCU) for Windows Version 8.10 (or earlier) is being used.

If a frame with a tag of 4095 (0xFFF) is received on the NIC or Team that is configured for 802.1Q VLAN Tagging, the following Blue Screen messages may be displayed:

Stop 0x000000D1 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL in cpqteam.sys

Under certain conditions when using HP ProCurve switches, if a switch port is configured for tagging on one VLAN without an additional untagged or Native VLAN, an untagged frame received on the port could be tagged by the switch with 4095 (0xFFF) and forwarded on the network to other devices connected to the switch. Any device connected to the originating switch port could generate an untagged frame. When this occurs, the potential exists for any HP ProLiant server with Windows teaming and 802.1Q VLAN enabled to Blue Screen. This has been detected with Heartbeat and Gratuitous ARP frames on ports without an untagged or Native VLAN configured.

Note: If multiple servers have encountered a Stop D1 Blue Screen in CPQTEAM.SYS at the same time, there is a good chance this issue may occur. This is because it would only take a single frame broadcast to the network with a tag of 4095 to affect many servers.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant server running Microsoft Windows 2000 or any edition of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and configured as described in the Description section above.

Note: HP NICs that use the HP NC61xx/71xx/310x Gigabit Ethernet NIC Driver are not affected.

RESOLUTION

Network Configuration Utility (NCU) for Windows Version 8.20 will avoid the Blue Screen when a frame with a tag of 4095 (0xFFF) is received. Network Configuration Utility (NCU) for Windows Version 8.20 is targeted for December 2005. This advisory will be updated when additional information is available.

As a workaround until Network Configuration Utility (NCU) for Windows Version 8.20 is available, change the configuration to have 802.1Q tagged ports in the environment configured with an untagged or Native VLAN on the switch.
